BaT Exclusive: Amazing 1963 Ford Econoline Van, 1963 ford econoline van for sale

1/22/2013 Update: This van has been sold.

This 1963 Ford Econoline cargo van was on-site at our BaT display at the Portland Historic Races in July, and we can easily say that it is the cleanest early Ford van that we have ever seen. The seller is one of those twisted individuals who prefers black cars for their challenge, and this thing is kept buffed to a shine at all times and is perfectly sanitary down to the stainless fasteners and micro-polished details. He bought the truck dirty and needing an interior and other sorting, and he has completed the project to an awesome standard with vintage Ansen sprint alloy wheels to finish it off. He says he has 1000+ of his own hours in the detail work on this thing, and after sitting inside it and watching passers-by freak out over the details, we believe him. It is now available in Portland, Oregon for $12,900.

1963 ford econoline van for sale

The seller bought it from a gentleman that bought it from his friend who was the restorer. That new owner wasn&';t a car guy and let the rig go down hill and wanted something different, and when he found it the current seller was attracted to the body style and black color so he decided to rescue it. He sanded, cut, buffed, and touched up the paint and it came out quite good. He says it is very shiny with no dents, no dings, and no rust bubbles. All the brightwork is re-polished and in excellent condition, and the door glass and wing windows have new fuzzies and seals. In case you are wondering, the seller also owns the transpoerter below that he loaned us for the lawn display. It was equally spotless, black, and jaw-dropping.

The seller sourced the wheels, chromed the bumpers, replaced the front windshield and seal, replaced all the door seals, replaced the kingpins, resurfaced the clutch, rebuilt the heater, added an auto sound period correct stereo with OEM looking speakers, and did a complete build-out the interior. That included repainting the dash, detailing the gauges, repainting and insulating the doghouse, insulating the roof and walls, installing a suspended headliner, and recovering the front seats.

Ebony vinyl covered padded paneling is on walls and door panels, and the rear floor was leveled to install wall to wall carpeting with pad/welting and stainless steel sill plates at all the doors. Most fasteners were replaced with polished stainless, and the stock steering wheel, turn signal switch, horn button and glove box were restored. Even period correct dome lights were installed inside.

The drivetrain consists of the Ford 170 cubic-inch 6-cylinder with a 3-speed manual with syncro first gear and a 9-inch rear axle. The van was said to be a ground-up restoration 5 years ago, with the engine, trans, diff, and brakes all gone through. It starts, runs, and drives very good according to the seller, with a very quiet running engine and great shifting transmission. The seller says that the brakes feel and look new, all gauges work, and it has heat, wipers, music, and an OEM manual choke.

The underside of the van is painted, clean, and detailed. A new muffler and head pipe were added, and the engine compartment is detailed and has new OEM style decals. The VIN plate is restored, and the van also comes with a Dear John letter dated 1966 that he says he found in the defroster vent. Is was written by a lady that is breaking up with her man, probably as he is leaving for the service. The custom surfboard rack with polished rail brackets, hand rubbed zebrano wood (with an aluminum insert) cross bars and leather straps are included, and it comes with one “Surfboards by Phil” longboard from the 1960s, as shown in the photos.

History does tend to repeat itself, especially in the car business. Detroit&';s more recent efforts to compete with import compact trucks was once a serious undertaking, and is now quickly dwindling away to nothing. The same thing happened once before, in the early sixties. In response to real (or imagined) incursions into the light truck field by imports, Detroit launched a barrage of new compact vans and trucks. Ford was the most prolific in the 1960-1961 period, offering no less than three distinct types of pickups. The most creative and nontraditional one was the Econoline pickup. Not surprisingly, it was the least successful (of Ford&';s three types), and petered out after a few years. Americans know how they like their Ford trucks, and the Econoline was not it

Of course, the Econoline van and pickup, as well as the Corvair and the later Dodge versions were all inspired by the VW Bus and pickup (coming very soon here). The VW pickup probably wasn&';t really that much of a threat due to the 25% “chicken tax” that kept sales mainly confined to VW dealers as parts haulers and a few die-hards. But the raging success of the VW Beetle and to some extent the VW bus put Detroit on edge, and largely precipitated the creative rush of compact cars and trucks that all came gushing forth in &';60 and &';61.

Ford and Chevrolet based their new compact vans and trucks on their respective new compact cars, the Falcon and Corvair. And just like with the car versions, the pragmatic and utterly conventional, simple and cheap to build RWD Falcon trounced the adventurous rear-engined air-cooled Corvair in the car segment, so did their offshoot trucks. The Econoline van instantly became the best seller in the field, and Chevy quickly cobbled up a Chevy-II based van-only version to compete (CC here ), and Dodge followed the same steps with their D-100 Van and pickup. Obviously, the Corvair van&';s inherent advantages of drastically better traction, braking and handling were offset by its lack of a flat floor throughout.

It doesn&';t take more than a casual glance at the Econoline pickup to tell that it has a serious weight distribution problem. Ford installed a 165lb weight over the rear wheels in a effort to mitigate the problem, but lets just say this is not the thing to take out in the snow. But it was remarkably compact, yeat it sported a 7.5 foot long bed and a roomy cab with storage behind the rear seats; essentially the first extended cab pickup ever. And it was economical to run. with its light weight offering modest resistance to the little 144 and 170 cubic inch sixes. Ford claimed that up to 30 mpg in its ads.

The Econoline pickup faced a lot of internal competition as well as external. In 1960, Ford relaunched the Ranchero as a Falcon. And a conventional F-100 cost some $86 more. That left a pretty compact niche left, and public utilities turned out to be the big buyers of the little Econoline and Corvair pickups. Phone companies loved the space efficiency and low operating costs. But even then, after first year sales of 14k Econole pickups, their sales steadily dwindled, down to two thousand in their final year, 1967. That pretty much coincides with the birth of Japanese small pickup sales on the west coast.

I&';ve always been drawn to these trucks for their compact size yet roomy cabs, despite their limitations. Of course, as the former owner of a Dodge A-100 van, I can well imagine what they handled like with another couple hundred pounds less in the rear quarters. And the front crush zone is a comparable to a can of Orange Crush. But it makes a handy around-the-town scooter, like this one, which is the daily driver of Joe, who does superb vintage restoration work on European cars out of his small shop. He picked it up recently, rebuilt the tired 170 six, and will eventually get to the body. Don&';t ask why, but I love the exhaust sound of that little Falcon six, a pleasant mixture of nasal smoothness with an overlay of raspiness.

For some reason, this is a vehicle that I can&';t quite take my eyes off: the combination of its odd proportions that challenge the conventions, and its jaunty cuteness. It&';s also an extremely European-looking vehicle, although pickups in the American sense just weren&';t hardly a reality there. And those red wheels don&';t hurt either. These pickups may have been a sales dud, but they sure brightened up our carscape in their day. And today. Enjoy.

My Dad, brother and I inherited one of these from my uncle. He had used it to haul hay, so it barely had a scratch in the bed. The tin can thin front end was pushed in a bit and my cousin had dropped a bolt down the intake….not good when the engine is running. We stripped it, rebuilt the engine, pounded out the front end…..learned a lot. One of the best things I liked about it was that we could work on the engine in the rain without getting soaked. To soon it became an unfinished project…..me to college, brother to the Navy. Dad sold it primered and unfinished. Only got ot drive the thing once, but it was pretty fun and different.

“Ford installed a 165lb weight over the rear wheels in a effort to mitigate the problem”

Ouch. Bad engineering. Sounds like a Windows patch.

Please keep these articles about commercial vehicles. In my eyes these forgotten vehicles nobody talks about are more interesting than a Ferrari or an AC Cobra. There is something HONEST in commercials.

Ronhawk…….you&';re not kidding about the cost of living being low down there. My parents bought a home there on 5 acres with pond, for not much more than they sold their home here for. It was on a 60×210 ft. lot!

And it&';s awesome there with all of the old cars and trucks everywhere you go. And the people are amazing! So much friendlier than up north. Time to leave for work now.

Infinitely cooler are the ones like this, but they have a tailgate-like structure where the door opening on a van would be….usable as a ramp for livestock (sheep) or small, wheeled tools. Quirky but fun.

I remember a famous drag racer based on one of these, painted bright, fire-engine red, dubbed “The Little Red Wagon.” Actually had enough torque to pull the front wheels off the ground….pretty cool.

But actually what probably killed these off (literally) was the Darwinian tendency…people who liked these and bought and drove them, tended to be DRT in a head-on or rollover….messily.

It is very easy to get these things up on two wheels. Two wheels not belonging to the same axle. You ever see the Tippy Truck warning sign on circular exit ramps? One of those signs should be on the dashboard of these trucks.

Wow, I remember seeing the old Econolines all the time when I was a kid, and more rarely these pickups. For some reason they bring a smile to my face. I&';d love to take one for a spin.

And they must have really outsold the Corvair vans, because I don&';t remember EVER seeing one of those!

I do like the looks of these. I&';m sure the handling is interesting unloaded. There was a very rare Mercury (Canada only) version for sale here not too long ago.

“Ford installed a 165lb weight over the rear wheels in a effort to mitigate the problem”

“Ouch. Bad engineering. Sounds like a Windows patch.”

More like one of many Porsche rigs for the 911 – ‘cept it wasn&';t 165, and ‘natch it was up front.

If i owned this truck, I would have stored the original 170 and installed a later 250 engine. You would need to change the bellhousing, but everything else is exactly the same. You could use the valve cover and other pieces from the 170, and paint it the same color for the vintage 65 look.

Even a 200 would make a bit more torque, and you could keep the same bellhousing.

Marc Macinnis……the little red wagon was a dodge. There was also an econoline dragster, but I can&';t remember what the owner named it.

He actually had it set up so that the body went down the dragstrip backwards. I believe it had a ford 427 cammer.

I was lucky enough to see it in person back in the day at dragway 42 in salem, as well as the little red wagon.

Line please? An unlikely movie star and getaway car, a 1965 Econoline van makes an appearance in the 1972 film, The Getaway. starring Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw.

1963 ford econoline van for sale

“What’s Your Line? Ford Econoline!” The compact Econoline was a popular choice as a work utility vehicle. Shortly after its introduction, the Econoline van was adopted as a fleet vehicle by the Bell Telephone System. Inexpensive to maintain and operate, the versatile van would remain a familiar fixture on service and installation calls throughout the decade.

Econoline at the finish line. The “Little Yellow Wagon,” a wheelstanding pickup, was a popular exhibition feature at national NHRA events from 1965 through 1968. The 1965 Econoline truck, modified by John Sachs, featured a sub-frame that carried a Hilborn injected 427 Ford Hi-riser engine. Under the control of driver Bill Kolb Jr. the “Little Yellow Wagon” consistently recorded ET’s of 10.40, powering down the track on only the rear wheels for the entire ¼ mile run.

1963 ford econoline van for sale

The History of the 1961-67 Econoline

Introduced in the fall of 1960 as a 1961 model, the Econoline was unlike any truck previously offered by Ford. Mechanically based on Ford’s compact Falcon line, the flat nosed Econoline was a light duty work truck that featured unibody construction and an engine located between and behind the seats of a “mini cab-over” design.

As the name implied, the Econoline, combining a lightweight design with a gas saving 6-cylinder engine, was an economical vehicle to operate. A 144 CID 6-cylinder engine was standard in the early models, graduating to 170 CID and 240 CID six-cylinders in later production years. A three-speed manual transmission was also standard for the early years of production, with an automatic transmission eventually added as an option.

With a design that strived to be both compact and yet provide ample cargo space, the Econoline had some inherent weaknesses. Handling was an issue as the combination of the cab-over design and engine location created a disproportionate balance of weight over the front of the vehicle. To compensate for this uneven balance, Ford fit a 165 lb weight over the rear wheels, but it did little to improve handling or the lack of traction to the rear tires. Despite its design flaws, the first generation Econoline would remain virtually unchanged from its introduction through 1967.

The 1961 Econoline was offered in three body styles, Pickup, Delivery Van, and Station Bus. For 1962, Ford reclassified the Station Bus was as a passenger car and offered it as part of the Falcon line. The Econoline Pickup and Delivery Van continued to be offered.

By 1963, the Econoline Pickup increased its rated payload capacity and offered an optional custom cab. The 1963 Econoline Van added standard dual outside rearview mirrors, heavier roof rails, as well as an optional 8-door version of the van. The Station Bus continued in the Falcon line.

For 1964, a new model, the Panel Van, joined the Econoline family. The new addition was basically a standard van without the side cargo doors. The 1964 Econoline Pickup offered an optional heavy-duty package, as well as an upgraded cab interior with color-keyed seat trim, cab headliner, and locking glove box door. The 1964 Van offered a heavy-duty package and left hand cargo doors as options.

In 1965, the Econoline series was again expanded to include the Supervan, which featured an 18-inch body extension. The 1965 Van sported stronger, more massive bumpers, a lower, more comfortable driver's seat, an integral package tray, and a more efficient heater. The rear of the 1965 Econoline Van, Station Bus, and Club Wagon were quickly distinguished from previous models by their rear cargo door-mounted license plate bracket and lamp.

In 1966, the Econoline-based family of Club Wagons was broadened, and the interior trim scheme was improved.

1967 would be the final year of production for the first generation Econoline. New features for the year included a dual brake master cylinder, padded sun visors, 2 speed wipers, and back-up lamps.

Just one year after launching the all-new 2013 Fusion, Ford is reportedly set to alter the sedan's powertrain lineup with the addition of a new 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. A member of Blue Oval Forums apparently got their hands on the ordering guide for the 2014 model year Fusion, and this 1.5-liter mill is set to be introduced with late availability.

This lines up with other news about the Chinese-market Mondeo being offered with a new 1.5-liter EcoBoost - a derivative of the 1.0-liter triple that will come to North America under the hood of the Fiesta (note: the 1.0 is also offered in the current Euro-spec Mondeo). In the Chinese application, the larger three-pot engine produces 177 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, which is very close to the current 1.6-liter inline-four's output numbers of 178 hp and 184 lb-ft.

What's interesting, however, is that the 1.6-liter engine will reportedly still be offered in the Fusion, but only with the six-speed manual transmission. The smaller 1.5-liter EcoBoost will only be mated to a six-speed SelectShift automatic, and will feature start/stop. This means that while the 1.5 is slightly down on power compared to the 1.6, it could easily improve fuel economy numbers, allowing the Fusion to regain the title of having the best mileage in the segment, likely besting the 38 miles per gallon of the Nissan Altima. Currently, the Fusion 1.6 is rated at 23 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.

When Ford Australia announces, as it did recently, that it wants to celebrate the end of its Ford Performance Vehicle division with a Falcon FPV GT-F that celebrates big-bore origins of the nameplate, it's talking about the kind of car in this video.

At some point the classic Falcon GT - said to be an XY series - was invited to a test of acceleration against a Lamborghini Gallardo. At the very least, the Falcon GT had a 351 cubic-inch motor and 300 horsepower, but whatever this guy's got under the hood of his yellow sedan makes has him so confident that he doesn't even move his elbow from its resting place on the door.

You'll find a reminder of Ford Australia's heyday, a raucous exhaust note and some NSFW language in the short video below.

Ford is making a big bet on aluminum with its new 2015 F-150, and it's possible that the decision will hurt the company financially, at least in the short term. After earning a record $8.6 billion in 2013, the Blue Oval does not expect to set another record in 2014. According to Automotive News, that's "largely attributable to F Series," says Bob Shanks, Ford's Chief Financial Officer.

To retool for the new F-150, Ford will idle its Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan for 11 weeks and the Ford Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri for 2 weeks. "3 of the 13 overall weeks occur during what normally is our summer shutdown timeframe," said Mike Levine, Ford Trucks Communication Manager, in an email to Autoblog. The extra 10 weeks will be preparing for the more aluminum-intensive construction for the trucks and will mean over 2 months of no F-150s being made. For comparison's sake, Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne just confirmed that the 200 plant in Sterling Heights, MI will be down for 30 days to retool for the new model, but obviously there are many more F-150 production variables than for the midsize sedan.

Levine notes that Ford is already running three shifts at both plants, and says the automaker has plans to ensure that there is adequate supply of the full-size pickups during the retooling process. The company does not want to suffer a shortage of the vehicle that accounted for 31-percent of its 2013 US sales and an even bigger percentage of its profits.

There's something to be said for luxed-out vans. They're cool, and as a means of getting chauffeured about, they're extremely comfortable and far more low key than your typical executive luxury sedan. For the 2014 New York Auto Show, Galpin Auto Sports has shown the potential of the new-for-the-US Ford Transit as an ultra-luxurious people hauler.

The Transit Skyliner Concept, which we previewed last week, sports four finely crafted captain's buckets that can be moved into different formations based on need. Want to watch a movie? The seats can be swung around to face a 52-inch screen. Riding along with some business associates? A table can be popped up. There's even a configuration for tailgating.

The materials are, unsurprisingly, pretty plush. The leather seats and wood floors (yes, wood floors in a van) look great, while the trunk and its customized luggage are a nice touch, as well.

Standing as quite a contrast from the spy shots of the 2015 Ford Mustang we saw earlier today, our spies also sent along these pictures of the next-generation F-150 pickup out testing in its (heavily camouflaged) full prototype body. Much of the new truck's design is hidden under the bulky coveralls, but we expect a lot of its new lines to be inspired by the Atlas concept that debuted at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

Perhaps the biggest unknown surrounding the new F-150 is what, exactly, its body will be made of. Earlier reports have suggested that lightweight aluminum materials may be used throughout, offering a serious reduction in weight versus previous models. But Ford engineers will need to be careful, though, as they need to keep a tight rein on costs while preserving class-competitive (if not class-leading) towing and payload capacity.

On the powertrain front, the new F-150 will undoubtedly carry on with EcoBoost engines, and we'd bet on a normally aspirated V8 as well. A diesel option hasn't been confirmed, but we wouldn't be surprised to see one some time in the truck's lifecycle. Mum's the word on when the production F-150 will be revealed, but our best guess is that we'll see it at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Thinking about buying a new Mustang, but want to know what kind of fuel economy it'll get? Well we have our first indication as the pony-car enthusiasts over at Mustang6G.com have gotten a hold of the Monroney window stickers for a few of the new 2015 Mustang models.

Although the V8 model is not among them, we can now see how the EPA has rated those models with a half dozen pistons or less. The Mustang EcoBoost with the turbo four and a manual transmission has been rated at 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway. The V6 manual gets 17 city and 28 highway, while the V6 automatic squeezes out a bit more in the city at 19 mpg but carries the same 28 highway rating.

By way of comparison, the latest Chevy Camaro with the V6 and a stick shift gets the same 17/28 EPA rating as a similarly equipped new 'Stang, and the V6 automatic Camaro gets 18/27 (slightly behind the Ford, but if you opt for the Camaro 2LS with its V6, automatic and 2.92 rear axle ratio, you'll be looking at 19 and 30).

These original E-Series flat nose trucks were only built from 1961 to 1967. The Econoline Pickup was a 2 door variation of the 1st Generation Ford and Mercury Econoline 3-dr vans. Unlike VW and Chevy; Ford placed the engine between and behind the front seats. In the first year of production early 15,000 pickups were made and sold. Its early success led to adoption from competitors including the classic Dodge A100 van and pickup models.
